meher verma
Meher Varma. Anthropologist/Fashion writer.

What do you do and where did you grow up?
I’m a graduate student and an anthropologist in the making. I grew up in lots of different places — Dhaka, Hong Kong, Beijing, LA, NY, Kodai, DC.

What’s the best thing about constantly moving?
It opens your mind. You are constantly re-introduced to new people and you have to reinvent yourself all the time. Things are temporary, there is a sense of influx, it prepares you for the world.

I am going to ask you a question that I am asked often: What do you think about Indian fashion?
When someone asks me this question I always ask them what do they mean by it and I twist it to ‘What do you think about fashion in India?’ Indian fashion as Indian fashion is very restrictive and we should see it as fashion in India.

I think fashion in India is a lens to see what’s happening in the country on a larger level. Without talking about all of the other things like class, modernity, economy, social/political issues we can not talk about fashion in India. When we say where is fashion in India going we are actually asking where India is going.

How did you get interested in writing about fashion?
I sensed a serious lack of analytical writing about clothes, designers, and the industry. I think clothes are never just clothes, they’re always elucidating something else. So with a background in anthropology, which gives me the tools for deep analysis, I thought fashion was a perfect subject to start asking some very tough questions and writing about them.

I’m interested in writing about fashion only as long as it elucidates something else about the world. My phD dissertation in anthropology is an example of this. I’m looking at the cultural industry of New Delhi based fashion designers as a lens to look into large issues like changing ideas of gender and class.

Do you have a favourite film?
I have watched Almost Famous 86 times. I liked the theme — crisis of fame, and the soundtrack.

street style delhi ELLE IndiaHow would you describe your style?
Feminine, preferably clean silhouettes, with elements of firmness. I like making an effort in putting an outfit together but also enjoy projecting seriousness and strength.
Are you inspired by anybody from popular culture?
I like the women in Fellini films. They brim with timeless elegance, drama, and sheer breadth of character. Utter treat to watch. I’d also have to add women in Bunuel films (ironically) and the wonderful Diane Keaton to the list.

men street style delhi“That spring I was in my 2nd year of college studying Applied Psychology. A friend of mine gave me a back row pass for I believe it was Abraham & Thakore. The evening before, I went to the mall and bought a school-girl skirt with borrowed money because if I didn’t wear that then and there I wasn’t going to do it anywhere else – I was 20 for heaven’s sake.

You were the only person who took photos of us, asked us things and actually talked to us. I thought fashion week was the place to be – I pretended I was brave and fearless, didn’t care much about the shows as much as I cared about sitting idly in one of the benches like the rich people waiting for the next show in their designer sneakers.

What drew me towards fashion was pure admiration for beauty and style. What drew to me to the week was the audacity of the crowd being themselves so freely, which I hadn’t seen in college.”

How are you feeling today?
I just got back from a small vacation hence feeling not so good here but it’s fine I guess.

Why’s that?
i don’t know where to begin. I think I just needed to be around a beach and far away from my past.

Where did you go?
Goa.

I have to write something about you to go along with your photo.
Haha I’ve suddenly forgotten who I am.

What makes you happy?
The sun, dragonflies and butterflies, finding a new specie of flowers/plants makes me very happy, making people try food they have never tried before is one of my favourite things.

What kind of change would you like to see around you/in the country?
Inclusivity and empathy are on top of my list.

What makes you dance?
Definitely something with a funky bassline. I love a good beat and bassline.

What makes you happy?
Going out for a meal(I love pork and seafood), cooking for close friends and family, being able to create art with friends, cuddles, starry sky, sun bathing, and generally beach/hills chilling in the sun.

What’s the best and worst thing about where you are?
Best – having old friends and family in the same city as me; I love that there’s so many things to do in the city.
Worst – the filth in the air and the streets, also how rude & aggressive people can be here.

What kind of change would you like to see in the world)?
It would be great to see people being more empathetic to each other and nature. Less buildings, less trash, less cars. Decisions from higher up being made for good, not for greed.

> Is there anybody who inspires your style?
I really like Erika Bowes, Alyssa Lau, the 90’s Drew Barrymore, Rachel Nguyen from thatschic, and Kiko Mizuhara.

> How would you describe the way you are dressed in the photos?
> Something that’s easy to run around in and sweat but still look cute.

“I am very outgoing, easy to talk to, and a good listener. I would like to consider myself as someone who doesn’t make distinctions based on people’s background and culture and that allows me to make personal connections with most people I meet.”

What kind of music are you into? I like hip hop, R&B, and I am currently listening to Cardi B’s Invasion of Privacy.
