“This kira is the first one I ever bought. A piece like this could take a year to make. My earrings and necklace were made by my mother — she likes recreating jewelry. The coral stones are traditional; you’ll find almost everyone owning a piece. Dzi — the cat eye, is rare and expensive. It is difficult to find original dzi pieces and the ones I’m wearing have been collected and passed on from generation to generation.”

What’s your favourite place in Bhutan?

Layap Woman. The Layap are indigenous people inhabiting the high mountains of northwest Bhutan.

“The dress of the Layap women consists of yak wool garments with a distinctive conical pointed hat (that is unique to Laya). The hat is the same hat in which they were banished from Tibet in the 15th century and they continue to wear it to this day. If they fail to wear the hat they believe they will upset the village spirits.”

street style paro bhutan
Old Bhutanese woman. Photographed on the main market street in ParoBhutan.

It was getting dark and the only three people I stopped for photos had refused and I had nothing else to do so I decided to follow her just to see where she was going. We crossed through the entire Paro market stretch — she stopped thrice for a moment each time to greet people who recognised her. We crossed the taxi stand, my hotel, further off on an unfamiliar road. By now we’d been walking for about 20 minutes until she crossed the road for no apparent reason to me and then we were walking parallel to each other and then somehow I got ahead of her and she crossed the road back again and then she was walking behind me..
